How much does embroidery cost?

Popular with businesses that want to associate their brand with professionalism and quality, embroidered clothing and hats are usually reasonably priced. While there is more than one way to price embroidery, several methods and cost components are common to all.

  • Cost Per 1,000 Stitches

In this method of pricing embroidery, the cost is calculated per 1,000 stitches. The number of stitches it takes to complete a design is based on its size, how many color changes are necessary, and the number of garments to be embroidered. Typically, as the number of garments to be embroidered increases, the cost per 1,000 stitches decreases. The cost per stitch typically starts at 50 cents.

This method includes a Tape Charge, which is sometimes called a Digitizing Fee, for making your design ready for embroidery. This can be a one-time flat fee (usually around $100 for new orders) for a total order, or a flat fee plus an additional amount per extra 1,000 stitches.

Some companies also include a Running Charge (usually less than 50 cents) per every extra 1,000 stitches.

Cost estimates are generally provided once the company doing the work digitizes your logo, which will convert it to thread and calculate the number of stitches necessary to complete it on each garment.

  • One Price Per Piece

This pricing method is simple and popular because it is the fastest way to order branded embroidered clothing and hats. This method involves selecting an item of clothing – either at a store or via a website – that includes its cost and the total embroidery process cost for it in one price. There are no stitch numbers, tape charges, or running charges to calculate.

  • Minimum Fees and Deposits

Make sure to have a clear understanding of whether or not the embroidery provider has a minimum quantity required per order. This commonly starts at 12 items and in many cases allows you to avoid a tape charge.

Deposits are also a standard in the process of ordering embroidered items, often with 50% of the cost of your order is required up front.
